IFJ calls on authorities to continue investigation into kill of Ahmed Suale

Accra, March 21, GNA – The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Africa Office has stated that the arrest and prosecution of a suspect in the alleged murder of Ahmed Suale marks a significant step toward combating impunity for crimes against journalists.

The IFJ called on Ghanaian authorities to continue their investigation into Suale’s killing, until the perpetrators are prosecuted and brought to justice.

The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a businessman who once worked with Suale at Tiger Eye, a private investigative firm, was arrested by the police last Monday.

He has made court appearances and been remanded in police custody. He is scheduled to reappear before the court on April 1, 2025.

In a statement signed by IFJ’s General Secretary, Mr. Anthony Bellanger, the Federation welcomed the development in the case, which it has closely monitored through its affiliates for six years.

The IFJ stated that it, along with its affiliate, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), welcomed the judicial progress in the investigation and reiterated that crimes against journalists must not go unpunished.

“We hope this breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad,” the statement said.

The statement also noted that the GJA, which has been monitoring developments in Suale’s case since 2019, would engage with police leaders in the coming days to gather more details about the prosecution.

“We shall also demand updates from the police about investigations into the many cases of assaults against journalists, including Latif Iddrisu’s case, which we had also earmarked for presentation to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” it added.

Suale, an investigative journalist, was shot dead by unidentified individuals riding a motorbike in Madina, Accra, in January 2019.
