Tamale, Mar 8, GNA – HOPin Academy, an entrepreneurship ecosystem support organisation in Tamale, has marked this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) with a call for women to embrace technology innovations for sustainable development.

The event, which was on the theme: “Accelerate Action: Forging Women’s Economic Empowerment for a Brighter Tomorrow”, brought together young women entrepreneurs and students from tertiary institutions among others from the informal sector in the Northern Region.

Miss Augustina Abariche, Communication and Social Media Manager at HOPin Academy, speaking during the event in Tamale, said it was to recognise the contributions of young women to national development particularly in technology and entrepreneurship.

She said it was also to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to leverage technology, boost their businesses, and create employment opportunities for other young women across the country.

She added that the platform was tailored to enable women already working in tech-related fields to share their experiences and challenges, inspiring participants to pursue similar career paths.

Miss Abariche encouraged women to prioritise teamwork, collaboration, and synergy as key strategies for building successful technology careers.

Miss Shafawu Mohammed Nurudeen, a software engineer and women’s empowerment advocate, urged participants to break free from outdated gender norms and pursue their passions with determination and hard work.

She called on the government and relevant stakeholders to invest in technology and engineering sectors by providing infrastructure and resources to make teaching and learning more accessible.

Miss Benedicta Awunpoka Akalari, an entrepreneur and event participant, shared her key takeaway saying, “One thing that stood out for me was the need for us to use our social media platforms to advertise our businesses and products to help create a competitive advantage in the digital market space.”

The IWD is observed annually on March 08 to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness of ongoing disparities, and encourage action towards a more inclusive society.
