Kpone, March 25, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has commenced an investigation into a fire outbreak at a fuel tanker yard behind the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s (GPHA) Unity Terminal at Kpone.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at about 09:00 hours, caused some fuel tankers to burn completely.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that the fire incident occurred when fuel was being transferred from one of the fuel tankers loaded with fuel products to another tanker at the Phil’s Trunk Company Limited in Kpone Agro Industry.

Divisional Officer II (DOII) Ebenezer Yenzu, the Public Relations Officer of GNFS, Tema Region, told the GNA that the fire service department received a call at about 0905 hours on Sunday morning and immediately, deployed personnel from the Devtraco Fire Station to attend to it.

DOII Yenzu noted that they deployed additional personnel from four other fire stations to aid in putting out the fire to prevent any possible explosion, as debris from the fire might affect the neighbourhood when exploded.

He said the firefighters, on arrival, saw that five fuel tankers were on fire, with one of the truck’s cabin partially burnt and five of its tyres totally burnt.

He explained that a truck with the registration number GN-7891-14 had the bulk and head totally burnt, while two trucks also got burnt and an additional one that had its cabin totally burnt with its tail partially burnt.

He said that two officers of the company were rescued from a storey building, and about 54,000 litres of diesel were also salvaged from the truck that was not damaged.

The GNFS Tema PRO added that there were four quantities of a 1,000-litre cage tank and three bulk storage tanks that were also salvaged in the incident.

He said although the cause of the fire was yet to be established, they had a lead to the exact cause of the fire, adding that no casualties or injuries were recorded.

He said the fire officers from national and the region were present at the scene to help prevent damage or explosions.

DOII Yenzu advised the public, especially tanker yard owners and operators, to take precautions and follow protocols when handling fuel and petroleum products by looking out for spillages and leakages.

He also urged them to ensure that their vehicles were properly examined and maintained, and keep fire-fighting devices and adequate protections to avoid any fire incidents.
