GMet receives International Organization for Standardization re-certification

Accra, March 20, GNA The management of Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) today received an International Organization for Standardization (ISO 9001) re-certification from the International Certification Group based in the United Kingdom.

It will enable GMet to continuously provide products and services that satisfy clients in the aviation industry for safer skies, and reliable climate data for better national planning.

That is also a springboard for the Agency to provide weather forecasting service to farmers, businesses, and citizens to help daily decision-making.

Mr Dean Moriarty, Lead Auditor at the International Certification Group handed over the certificate for re-certification to Dr Eric Asuman, the Director General of GMet, at a brief ceremony on Wednesday in Accra.

Mr Moriarty, who conducted the audit, praised the management noting that it signified leadership was compliant with all legal and regulatory requirements.

“The process we have gone through is very robust. For the initial audit this time, we did find some issues, however, the team has worked really diligently to close the gaps that we did find, and they have closed them successfully,” he said.

Mr Moriarty urged the management and staff of GMet to continue working hard, towards upholding the impressive standards the Agency had achieved.

Dr Asuman stated that the receipt of the re-certification reaffirmed GMet commitment to quality, reliability, and excellence in meteorological services.

“This moment marks an important milestone in our journey toward continuous improvement and global best practices, the implementation. It represents our promise to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality meteorological products and services that meet the needs of national and international stakeholders,” he said.

Dr Asuman noted that the initiation of the re-certification was a springboard for ongoing advancement enhance training and capacity-building programs for meteorologists and technical staff, as well as invest in state-of-the-art meteorological equipment to further improve accuracy and service delivery as well as refine operational workflows.

The move, he said, was to ensure that GMet remained agile and future-ready, adapting swiftly to emerging climate challenges and technological opportunities.

The Director General hinted that GMet was taking steps to expand its calibration laboratory capacity to serve more regional and international clients.

Work, he said, was progressing to renovate the old block and upgrade it into a world-class research facility with state-of-the-art equipment and tools to enhance its products and services.

Dr Asuman said GMet was collaborating with the Leeds University to introduce an app known as “Forecasting African Storms App,” that would improve location specific forecasts especially in relation to nowcasting.
