Accra, March 18, GNA-The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has honoured Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation as patron following his commitment to the sport since assuming office.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of GAF who presented an Armwrestling trophy to Mr. Adams said the gesture was to show appreciation to the minister who had shown positive signs of growing least financed sports.
The Sports Minister, who doubles as Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency thanked the Ghana Armwrestling Federation for the recognition.
He said Armwrestling was one of the fastest emerging sports Ghana had seen in a while with over 350 medals in all competitions.
He recalled when the National Armwrestling Team, Golden Arms won a total of 41 medals at the African Games which saw Ghana make history after being ranked among the top performers at the end of the continental showpiece.
“We must support Ghana Armwrestling, and I believe Ghana must feed on these talents more. We must reduce our extraction of natural resources, distractions of the environment and what have you and work on our talents and Armwrestling is one such talent we must invest in so that the youth can receive help from it,” he said.
Mr. Iddie Adams urged Ghanaians to support GAF in their quest to win more medals both locally and internationally.
He said one of the key areas he intended to focus much on was to support least financed sports, which he described as the foundation of sports development.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation congratulated participating countries for the role they played in making the competition a success.
The Federation also showed appreciation to its partners Center Point Mall, EIB Network and the Greater Accra Regional Minister for supporting the Independence Armwrestling Championship.
The event, attended by officials from the Ghana Olympic Committee, the National Sports Authority, and other stakeholders in the sports industry was part of GAF’s efforts to promote the sport and find new talents.
GAF since 2016 has been a key contributor to Ghana’s sports development, having been applauded by some prominent personalities across the globe.
In appreciation, GAF expressed its gratitude to the organizers, sponsors, and participants who made the event memorable.
The next major armwrestling event in Ghana is the Kids Armwrestling which is expected to draw thousands of kids to the table and encourage participation.
