Bolgatanga Traditional Council calls for resolution of chieftaincy dispute

By Godfred A. Polkuu

Bolgatanga, March 12, GNA – The Bolgatanga Traditional Council has appealed to Mr Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, to help resolve the longstanding chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The Bolgatanga Traditional Area has been without a Paramount Chief after the death of the late Paramount Chief of the area, Naba Martin Adongo Abilba III, on September 26, 2013.

The situation has since sparked a longstanding chieftaincy dispute in the area on who to succeed the late chief.

The longstanding dispute currently in Court has led to several loss of lives and properties, and retarded development in the traditional area over the years.

The Council, led by its Acting President, Naba Patrick Asaliya III, who called on the Minister in his office, congratulated him on his appointment and emphasized the need for the dispute to be fast-tracked to propel development in Bolgatanga.

Naba Asaliya III, who is the Chief of Yarikabisi, noted that the issue had hindered development efforts in the area, and called for closer collaboration between the Traditional Council and the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to resolve land disputes and other issues which required the intervention of the Council.

The Minister acknowledged that the negative impact of unresolved chieftaincy conflicts across the Region was impeding development.

He appealed for dialogue and admonished the parties in the conflict to allow for the legal processes to go through for the sake of peace.

He hinted that President John Dramani Mahama would soon visit the Region, and briefed on the issue for executive support.

Mr Atanga assured the Council of his commitment to work with stakeholders, especially the traditional authorities to achieve government’s agenda to reset the country.
