Berekum, (Bono), March 24, GNA – The Berekum East Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region, has warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste and littering.
Mr Bennedict Quao, the Assistant Berekum Municipal Engineer, who gave the warning said culprits would be sanctioned accordingly.
He explained that with the onset of the rains, the indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste and other materials could choke gutters, thereby affecting drainage systems leading to flooding.
Mr Quao gave the warning after the Assembly undertook a massive clean-up exercise at the Berekum central market, following a downpour which flooded the facility last week.
The participants desilted choked gutters, cleared debris and picked plastic waste and containers and swept the entire market.

Mr Quao expressed the assembly’s sympathy to the traders who were affected by the flood and assured the assembly commitment to improve the drainage systems to avert future mishaps.
He also urged the traders to be watchful and ensure that nobody dumped refuse to choke gutters and to block water flow.
Mr Joseph Baffour, the Assembly Member of the Kyiritwedie Electoral Area who led the clean-up exercise said environmental cleanliness and hygiene prevented outbreak of communicable diseases and urged the traders to keep the market clean.
One of the traders, Mr Evans Baah, expressed appreciation to the Assembly for the exercise and appealed to them to provide more dustbins and waste containers for the collection of waste at the central market.
