Waja-Akura (O/R), Mar 21, GNA – A dire situation is unfolding at Waja-Akura M/A Basic School in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, where makeshift classrooms pose a significant threat to the safety and education of pupils and teachers.

The school has struggled with inadequate infrastructure, forcing the use of temporary structures that are woefully inadequate and hazardous.

A recent visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed the alarming state of the school, with makeshift classrooms constructed from temporary materials lacking essential safety features.

With the rainy season approaching, concerns about the structural integrity of the buildings have intensified, sparking fears of potential collapses that could endanger lives.

Chief Inspector of Schools, Mr. Samuel Sunkwa expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing that every child deserves a safe and conducive learning environment.

“The current conditions at Waja-Akura M/A Basic School are unacceptable and must be addressed immediately,” he stressed.

Headteacher, Mr Kaundah Kenneth and teacher Kadijatu Atiku echoed these sentiments, highlighting the daily struggles faced by both teachers and pupils.

They lamented that while they are committed to providing quality education, the learning environment is not conducive for effective teaching and learning.

The school authorities have appealed to the government, NGOs, and philanthropic organizations to intervene urgently by constructing proper classrooms to ensure quality education for the children.

Parents and community members have also joined the call, emphasizing that investing in proper classrooms is not just about education but about ensuring the safety and future of their children.

They appealed to government, NGOs, and philanthropic organizations should prioritise the construction of proper classrooms at Waja-Akura M/A Basic School to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for pupils and teachers.
