Madrid, Mar. 19, (dpa/GNA) – At least one person has been killed as southern Spain was hit by heavy rains and flooding, news agency Europa Press reported on Tuesday.
Emergency responders found a body near the city of Seville, after a couple had been reported missing in the area.
The body was later identified as the missing wife, Europa Press said, citing police and the fire brigade.
The couple had been driving to work in an off-road vehicle on Tuesday morning when a stream north of Seville burst its banks and swept the vehicle away, it said.
The car was found and the woman’s body was later located in the bushes some 400 metres from the vehicle, said Francisco Toscano, the representative of the central government in Seville.
The search for the man is set to continue on Wednesday.
A cyclist is also missing, the El País newspaper reported.
Several roads have been blocked and rail traffic has been partly suspended in the region due to the floods.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated as a precautionary measure due to rising river levels, including in Cártama near Málaga.
Several people had to be rescued from flooding in the south-eastern region of Murcia, Europa Press reported.
Images broadcast by public broadcaster RTVE showed cars being swept away by the floods.
Some of the images recall the devastating floods that hit eastern Spain in October last year, killing more than 230 people.
