Kumasi March 6, GNA – The Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in Kumasi has swept eight medals at the 2025 Ashanti Regional Super Zonal Athletic School Competition.
This is the first time the school has won any medal at the schools super zonal athletics competition level, though had emerged winners twice at the zonal level of the competition.
The medals included a silver medal for 100 meters race, seven bronze medals for 200 meters and four by 100-meter relay.
These medals were awarded at the male division of the competition, which was organized by the Ashanti Regional Schools and Colleges Sports Federation.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Ebenezer Amega, Head of the Sports Department of the Armed Forces SHTS, said the achievement by the team was a history for the school.
“This is the first time in the history of the school that medals have been attained in the super-zonal inter-schools athletics competition,” he noted.
Overall, he said the school was ranked at the eighth position among 30 schools that competed, and achieved 25 points in the track events.
“Though we took part in the field events, we did not make any significant progress. We need to work more to achieve greater heights next year,” Mr Amega said.
However, he applauded the athletes for making history to boost morale and give hope to the school that there was a chance to become champions one day.
Mr Amega appealed to sports enthusiasts, old students and parents of the school to provide the school with landing foam, high jump upright and pole volts equipment to make field training easier.
Master Blessing Konadu Jnr, a Form Two student of the Armed Forces SHTS and the only athlete who won three medals, expressed satisfaction with his achievement.
He said he would work harder to attain a gold medal next year for himself and the school.
Master Konadu Jnr appealed to the government to invest in athletic games at the local level by organising many competitions every year to enhance the skills of the athletes.
“You will train the whole year and just engage in only one competition which would make you rusty,” he noted.
