Accra, March 20, GNA – Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin Thursday alleged that operatives of the National Security stole valuables, including cash and jewelry, during an alleged raid on the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
At a press conference in Parliament House in Accra, Mr. Afenyo-Markin claimed that the operatives, allegedly led by Mr. Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, took away an undisclosed amount of Ghana Cedis from Dr. Addison’s bedroom, as well as earrings and necklaces belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife.
He said: “Some GH¢10,000 on his bed could not be found. So, some of these hungry party foot soldiers they use who parade themselves as National Security Operatives are after all perhaps not being paid and they use this opportunity to steal.”
The Minority Leader condemned the alleged raid, describing it as “unlawful and an abuse of power.”
He, therefore, called on President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate action to rein in the alleged operatives involved.
“Ghana is a matured democracy and we should do better,” he said.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin also cited a similar raid on the residence of former Finance Minister Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta in February 2025, urging civil society organisations and human rights advocates to speak out against what he described as a “worrying trend of political persecution.”
The alleged raid had sparked widespread concern over the conduct of security operatives under the new administration. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the heavily armed officers allegedly disabled the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system before searching the house.
As of now, the government and National Security Secretariat have not responded to the allegations.
However, calls are growing for an independent investigation into the raid and the alleged misconduct of security personnel.
It is reported that armed men, approximately 20 in number, allegedly led by Mr. Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, raided the private residence of the former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Addison, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025
According to the reports, the raid occurred at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge property in Accra, where he was present at the time.
The report says the heavily armed men, some allegedly wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, demanded that Dr. Addison led them to the “vaults” in his house.
However, Dr. Addison allegedly informed them that he had no vaults or cache of cash at home.
Despite this, the security personnel allegedly ransacked the house, disabling the CCTV system beforehand.
According to eyewitnesses, no vaults were found, and no large amounts of cash were discovered.
The security personnel eventually left allegedly with the CCTV monitor and control unit.
Dr. Addison, his wife, and their family are reportedly traumatised following the raid.
