Accra, Feb.26, GNA – Mr Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, the Deputy Minister-Designate, Roads and Highways, says women need to be deliberately encouraged to venture into the road sector through the designing of an enticing educational programme to give them the desire and skills.

“The Roads Ministry has a technical training college in Koforidua and so, with the Minister, we may have to get the institution to redesign their programmes to be more female-sensitive to make it enticing for women to get involved,” he added.

The Minister-Designate made the remark on Wednesday during his vetting for the deputy ministerial position in an answer to a question by Madam Patricia Appiagyei, the Deputy Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

Mr Suhuyini admitted that although the roads sector was male-dominated, he was bent on working to promote gender diversity for the good of the country.

Speaking on the possibility of securing technology to enforce traffic regulations without humans on site, he said together with the Minister, they would have dispassionate conversations to explore technology available to serve the purpose, when approved.

On the need to ensure availability of technology to facilitate the free flow of traffic as road tolls had been abolished, Mr Suhuyini said the Minister had already issued a statement on government’s intention to engage the services of any company that could demonstrate the ability to roll out that technology.

Addressing a question on the deplorable nature of roads used by farmers, Mr Suhuyini said government was aware of the critical needs for roads to be reshaped and made motorable and safe for citizens, especially farmers, adding: “We need no reminder at all”.

Mr Suhuyini,n responding to a question on the number of wives he had said: “I’m married to one beautiful woman, Hamdiya Amadu Yakubu Vorsky, seated behind me, and together we have four children.”

Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the Chairman of the Committee, brought Mr Suhuyini’s vetting to a closure, sayning: “…I have no doubt of your integrity to assist my brother the Minister to deliver.”
