Accra, Feb 18, GNA- Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib, a New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija-Gbawe, has urged the government and citizens to take responsibility for pedestrian safety, particularly regarding the use of footbridges.
He reminded the citizenry that road safety was a shared responsibility, saying while the government continues to invest in infrastructure, it was equally important that “we all take responsibility for our actions,” Mr Shaib said on Tuesday.
He delivered a statement on the Floor of the House on the impact of pedestrian footbridges on road safety, and the failure of road users in effectively utilising pedestrian footbridges.
Mr Shaib proposed a multi-pronged approach to address the issue, including public awareness campaigns, enforcement of road safety regulations, design and accessibility improvements, and collaboration with traffic authorities.
He also called on the Minister of Roads and Highways to complete the ongoing footbridge construction at Tetegu, in the Weija-Gbawe constituency.
“… Mr Speaker, it is only through collective effort that we can reduce the number of avoidable pedestrian accidents and fatalities on our roads,” the MP said.
