Volta Regional Minister urges youth to exhibit sportsmanship in sports

Adaklu (VR,) Feb 14, GNA-Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has urged youth athletes to exhibit a high level of sportsmanship in all sporting games to promote unity and peace. 

He emphasised that sports have become a cash-cow for many nations and individuals and apart from raising the flag of countries, it is a source of economic boom and developing of sporting infrastructure was the way to harness talents. 

Mr Gunu was speaking at the maiden edition of the ‘Minister Cup’ held at the youth resource centre in Adaklu on Friday. 

He believes that by embracing sportsmanship, young athletes can help create a more harmonious and cohesive society and the need for young athletes to balance competitiveness with fair play and respect for their opponents. 

“This is a tournament that goes in line with NDC and President Mahama’s ideas to promote sports and unearth more talents for domestic and national duties,” he said. 

He commended Mr Gabriel Kwamiga Atokple, the newly elected Volta Regional Council of State member for the support and encouragement for the games. 

He said as the country seeks to unearth and develop its sporting talent and compete on the international stage, the importance of sportsmanship cannot be overstated and the value of fair play and respect for opponents should be promoted for positive and inclusive sporting culture in the Volta Region. 

The ‘Minister Cup’ was an initiative aimed at promoting sports development and youth empowerment for all youths in the 18 districts in the region. 

The tournament brought together teams from various districts, providing a platform for young athletes to display their talents and compete in a spirit of friendship and fair play. 

Meanwhile, Team Southern A constituency lost to Team Team Hohoe/Afadjato constituency by a lone goal in the knockout stages while Team Southern B constituency lost to Team Dayi constituency 4-5 on penalties. 

As the Volta Region continues to develop its sporting talent and promote youth empowerment, the importance of sportsmanship will remain a key focus and the value of fair play and respect for opponents will remain the focus.
