Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Minister visit Akosombo Textiles

Accra, Feb 25, GNA – In a move to bolster Ghana’s industrial sector, Madam Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, paid a visit to the factory of Akosombo Industrial Company Limited (AICL), producers of ATL fabrics, ABC wax, Da Viva, Treasurer, QSpice, and other several institutional prints.

A statement issued by Mr Sam Hemans-Arday, Head of Marketing, AICL, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Accra, on Tuesday said during the visit, the Sector Minister inspected the facility, interacted with the management, staff, and hinted on the government’s plans to support the company in scaling up production.

“…This aligns with our goal of creating jobs for young people and building an industrialised economy,” it quoted Madam Ofosu-Adjare as saying.

It said the government’s support would enable the company to operate three shifts, bringing them closer to achieving the 24-hour economy policy.

“This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting local garments, textiles, and apparel industries as part of efforts to boost employment and industrial growth under the proposed 24-hour economy policy,” the statement added.

Established in 1967, Akosombo Textiles Limited. (now Akosombo Industrial Company Limited – AICL) pioneered the modern textile industry in Ghana. With a well-equipped factory in Akosombo and sales and administrative offices in Accra, it continues to offer customers trendy and quality wax prints.

This development comes on the heels of the government’s efforts to revive other textile companies, including Volta Star Textile Limited, which has been shut down since July 2023.

The statement noted that Mr Kofi Boateng, Acting Chief Executive Officer of AICL, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Minister for her visit and government’s interest in supporting the local garments, textiles and apparel industry.

It also said the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Export-Import Bank, Mr Sylvester Mensah, reaffirmed the Banks commitment to supporting local manufacturers.
