Strengthening PTAs in Schools Will Improve Learning Outcomes– Dr Anab

By Solomon Gumah,

Tamale, Feb 20, GNA – Dr Chrys Anab, Head of Sustainable Development Studies at the University for Development Studies, has praised the Minister for Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, for his plans to strengthen Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) within the public school management system.

He explained that the delivery of quality education outcomes was dependent on active involvement of stakeholders, adding that the PTAs were one of such stakeholders that should be strengthened to support the growth and development of schools.

Dr Anab noted that PTAs had historically played crucial roles in public school management, by mobilizing resources to support government efforts in providing infrastructure to facilitate effective teaching and learning.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a stakeholders’ forum in Tamale, held to gather inputs for the National Education Forum, Dr Anab stated that revamping PTAs would rekindle the spirit of accountability and transparency in managing government resources.

He said, “Even though the government’s Capitation Grant is inadequate and irregular, a well-structured PTA can demand accountability and ensure the judicious use of the available resources”.

Dr Anab called on parents and other stakeholders to support efforts to revamp and strengthen PTAs to enable them to fulfill their mandate in schools.

Dr Anab also highlighted the need for merit-based leadership within PTAs, saying “Sometimes, PTA leadership elections are not based on merit. The revamping agenda must ensure that leaders are competent enough to demand accountability and advocate the wellbeing of schools”.
