Queen mothers trained on disinformation, misinformation

Accra, Feb. 24, GNA – The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana Office, in collaboration with the National Queen Mothers Ghana, Central Region, has trained queen mothers in the region on disinformation and misinformation.

The training, which formed part of efforts to address the growing challenge of disinformation and misinformation in the country, was held during the 6th Annual Queen Mothers’ Workshop under the theme: “Combating Disinformation and Misinformation: The Role of Queen Mothers in Ensuring Good Governance.”

In her welcome address, Nana Ama Ayensua Saara III, the Paramount Queen Mother of the Denkyira Traditional Area, expressed gratitude to KAS Ghana for empowering queen mothers with the requisite knowledge to combat disinformation and misinformation.

“I am particularly grateful to our development partners, KAS, and the resource personnel for agreeing to come and take us through this workshop aimed at equipping us in our bid to combat disinformation and misinformation in our localities,” she said.

Ms. Anna Lena Sabroso-Wasserfall, the Country Representative for KAS, said disinformation and misinformation posed serious threats, adding that queen mothers were crucial actors in the fight against the menace.

“As trusted and respected voices within their communities, and with misinformation increasingly shaping public discourse and decision-making, we believe that queen mothers can serve as advocates for an informed citizenry, protectors of social stability, and champions of fact-based governance,” she said.

Dr. James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, who facilitated the workshop, challenged the queen mothers to take an active role in the governance of the country.

“As our queen mothers discuss these issues with the chiefs and traditional authorities in general, they will have a place in the conversations regarding national governance.

“That is why I have challenged them to address their exclusion from national dialogue under the pretext that chiefs don’t engage in politics, even though their office is inherently political,” he said.

Nana Yaa Ansua, President of the Bono Regional Queen Mothers Association, said such workshops were educative and would help empower queen mothers to tackle the emerging threats in their communities.

“Combating disinformation and misinformation and enhancing the knowledge of queen mothers can trickle down even to the installation of chiefs and queen mothers, and I think this is very important,” she said.
