Manhean Polyclinic struggles with staff shortages

Tema, Feb. 28, GNA – Dr. Joseph Donkor, Medical Superintendent, Manhean Polyclinic, says the facility is facing severe human resource shortages, which is affecting healthcare delivery and the overall efficiency of the facility.

Dr Donkor said the situation has raised concerns among both healthcare workers and patients, as limited staff struggle to meet the increasing demand for medical services.

He made this known during the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate’s 2024 annual performance review under the theme “Leveraging Partnership and Strengthening Governance Systems to Advance Safety and Quality and Improve Service Delivery.”

He said the shortage of healthcare professionals, which included doctors, nurses, and other paramedics, had put significant pressure on the few available personnel, leading to longer waiting times, delays in treatment, and increased workload for the existing staff.

Dr Donkor mentioned that the situation was particularly challenging for emergency cases, as the limited number of health workers sometimes struggled to attend to patients requiring urgent care.

He explained that the facility serves a large population, and the current workforce was inadequate; as such, there was the need for more hands to ensure effective service delivery.

The Medical Superintendent called on the relevant authorities to address the issue by recruiting more staff to the facility, saying that without adequate human resources, the quality of healthcare services would continue to decline.

Officials from other health facilities, during their presentations, also expressed similar concerns over the low human resources in their facilities, which was affecting service delivery.
