Akropong-Akuapem (E/R), Feb. 20, GNA –The International Child Development Programme (ICDP), in collaboration with Starr Ghana, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to train social groups within Akuapem North Municipality on citizens’ equity and affirmative rights.
The training was dubbed: “Every Voice Counts at the Business Resource Centre in Akropong-Akuapem.”
The training was to address and awaken the sense of equity and affirmative rights of the citizenry at the grassroot, local and national levels to let their voices be heard irrespective of gender, social class, or religion.
Nana Adwoa Afriyie Bonsu, the programmes manager of ICDP noted that the project of her outfit has a broader umbrella that has to do with gender rights and empowerment.
She said the main components on which the programme revolves around were as follows: Inclusive Elections, Inclusive Participation and Accountable Governance.
She pointed out the group’s goal is to ensure that no one is left behind in terms of decision making and that the initiative would foster or promote inclusive participation.
She explained further that decision making is not limited to only governance, but all aspects of society.
Nana Afriyie Bonsu emphasised that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana enjoins Ghanaians of 18 years and above and of sound mind, to exercise their exclusive rights without limitation.
She called for the enforcement of legal provision to make public facilities more disability friendly
Madam Thelma Thompson, a board member of ICDP, emphasised on gender equity and affirmative action.
She said God has created human beings equal with male and female genders for specific roles to perform. She said social contract requires the emotional and psychological protection of men, women and even children in society and that these aspects involve creating supportive and enabling environment, fostering resilience, and promoting well-being.
