GRA initiates investigations into shooting incident at Sogakope Customs checkpoint

Tema, Feb. 21, GNA – The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has initiated investigations into a shooting incident that occurred at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on February 19, 2025.

This was in a statement issued by the GRA’s Communication and Public Affairs Department, copied to the Ghana News Agency-Tema Office.

It said officers of the Customs Division stationed at the Sogakope checkpoint received intelligence on a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled from Togo into Ghana.

“While attempting to apprehend the vehicle and its occupants, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and started fleeing. In response, the team fired some warning shots.”

It added that, unfortunately, a bystander was reported to have been struck by a stray bullet a few meters from the checkpoint, stating that the injured person was rushed to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital for medical attention and is responding to treatment.

“GRA assures the public that the incident is being investigated and that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of persons affected. We sympathise with persons affected by the unfortunate incident that occurred during the protection of revenue at the country’s borders and remain committed to our mission of ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders.”
