Accra, Feb 17, GNA – The Ghana Armed Forces and the Joseph Ashitey Hammond (JAH) Foundation have launched the centenary celebration of World War II veteran, Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Joseph Ashitey Hammond.
The decorated veteran, who was promoted from a Private to Warrant Officer Class 1 by the GAF in 2020 for his achievements, turns 100 years on May 10, 2025.
At a press launch at Burma Camp in Accra, Mr Joshua Hammond, son of Ex-WO1 Hammond, and spokesperson for the family, said the celebration aimed at paying tribute to the legacy and contributions of the “sole surviving witness to the historic February 28 crossroad shooting, both on the battlefield and in post-war Ghana.
Describing the war veteran as a symbol of resilience, patriotism, and dedication to service, Mr Hammond said: “This centenary celebration is a tribute to his legacy and a call to honour the sacrifices of our veterans, ensuring their stories are preserved for generations to come.”
He said the three-months long celebration, which will begin with a walk on Thursday, February 27, will be climaxed with a birthday dinner on May 10, 2025.
Giving key highlights of the celebration, Mr Hammond said a series of events, including a state recognition, international engagements, and a grand centenary dinner, will be held to celebrate the life of the veteran.
He said a special publication, documenting the remarkable journey, service, and impact of Ex-WO1 Hammond on Ghana and the Commonwealth would be unveiled.
Also included are various public engagements and advocacy activities, aimed at promoting national awareness of the role of Ghanaian veterans in world history and to advocate veteran welfare.
“This is to ensure that the legacy of WOI Joseph Ashitey Hammond is given the national and global recognition it deserves,” Mr Hammond said.
“We invite the media and the public to join us in amplifying this celebration.”
He said the veterans had laid down their lives to ensure that there was peace and stability in the country, urging all to support the veterans in whichever way they could.
Air Vice Marshal (AVM), Felix Adom Asante, the Deputy Chief of Staff of Administration at the General Headquarters, eulogised the achievements of the Veteran and his contribution to the nation.
He said the celebration would not only highlight Ex-WO1 Hammond’s legacy but also amplify the sacrifices of all veterans in ensuring lasting peace across the globe.
He expressed the military high command’s appreciation to the Hammond Family and pledged GAF’s support to the celebration.
