Accra,Feb.26, GNA – The ECOWAS Court of Justice, through its President, the Honorable Justice Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves has reaffirmed commitment to fairness and justice in the enforcement of the Community’s competition rules.
In his opening speech, during the inauguration and training of the Board members of the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) in Banjul, The Gambia, the President extended his congratulations to the ERCA Board members, who officially assumed office on 2nd October, 2024.
He commended the efforts of the ECOWAS Commission and the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture for organizing the crucial event.
He also paid tribute to the Executive Director of ERCA for his efficiency and diligence in setting up the training session.
President Gonçalves highlighted the key role of the Court in interpreting ECOWAS community law, including competition rules.
“The Court ensures that the decisions of the ERCA Board adhere to fundamental legal principles and guarantee justice for all concerned parties,” he stated.
He emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of competition rules, which are essential to ensuring fair markets, consumer protection, and the promotion of innovation in the region.
During his speech, he outlined four fundamental principles that should guide the actions of ERCA stakeholders.
These are Integrity and Impartiality, whch is ensuring that all decisions are made fairly, without undue influence, and in strict compliance with the law and strengthening cooperation among institutions and fostering the exchange of experiences for the effective enforcement of competition rules.
There must also be commitment to Continuous Learning to ensure that skills and knowledge are constantly updated to keep pace with developments in competition law and ensuring that the enforcement of competition rules benefits the regional economy, consumers, and businesses.
He encouraged participants to make full use of the training by asking questions and sharing their experiences.
“Our collective efforts can transform the economic environment of our region and promote sustainable economic justice,” he emphasized.
