Accra, Feb. 10, GNA – Mr. Harrison Tete-Donkor, former Eastern Director for the Department of Social Welfare, emphasized the critical role of a cordial relationship between parents and caregivers.
The relationship, according to the Social Worker, would ensure the holistic development of children, particularly those with special needs.
His remarks came during a vibrant “Night to Shine” event organized by Calvary Baptist Chapel and the Tim Tebow Foundation for students at New Horizons Special School in Accra.
The event, designed to celebrate children with special needs, transformed the school grounds into a festive arena of joy and inclusion.
Activities included a glamorous limousine ride escorted by police, a red carpet paparazzi experience, royal crowning ceremonies, cake-cutting, and spirited dancing.
Students revelled in the spotlight, embodying the roles of kings and queens for the evening.
Mr. Tete-Donkor highlighted the shared responsibility of parents, schools, and stakeholders in nurturing children’s God-given talents and innate qualities to help them become valuable contributors to their families, communities, and society at large.
Mr. Tete-Donkor stressed that the partnership between parents and schools must be built on a common goal to provide children with the tools and support they need to thrive
. “We cannot fail our children. This is a task we must accomplish well, ensuring that every child’s potential is sharpened and developed to its fullest.”
He called for stronger collaboration between schools and parents, urging both parties to work together to create an environment conducive to learning and growth.
“Parents and caregivers must network and share ideas, encourage each other, and learn from one another. This collaboration is essential for improving parenting skills and ensuring that children receive the best possible care and education.”
Mr. Tete-Donkor also emphasized the importance of networking among schools, particularly those catering to children with special needs.
He encouraged schools to engage in peer reviews, share best practices, and pool resources to enhance their effectiveness.
Reverend George Abaidoo, Lead Pastor of Calvary Grace Assemblies of God and Founder of Ghana Without Orphans, explained that the “Night to Shine” initiative sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation aims to empower children with special needs, including those with autism, by celebrating their uniqueness.
He said this marked the third time the event has been held in Ghana, providing a prom night experience for children with special needs, including those with autism.
Reverend Abaidoo emphasized that the goal of the event is to make these children to feel like kings and queens, fostering a sense of belonging and combating stigmatization.
He expressed the hope the initiative will instill God’s love in them and reinforce their understanding that they are special and appreciated.
