Beirut, Jan 29, (dpa/GNA)- At least eight people were killed and 20 others were injured, including women and children, after Turkish airstrikes targeted a busy market in Syria, a monitor group said on Tuesday.
According to Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, all the casualties were civilians, when the market was hit in the northern town of Sirrin.
The UK-based Observatory, which has been monitoring violence in Syria since 2011, said Turkish warplanes also carried out multiple airstrikes around Tishreen Dam and near Sirrin.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are backed by the United States, described the Sarrin attack as a “massacre.”
“These attacks documented with photos ..not only condemn Turkey but also, the international community’s silence in the face of these ongoing Turkish crimes and violations in north and eastern Syria,” the SDF statement said.
Since the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, the region has been hit by violent clashes between ruling Kurdish militias and Turkish-backed fighters.
The Syrian National Army (SNA), supported by Turkey, has been engaged in conflict with the SDF.
Turkish airstrikes in the region are a recurring occurrence.
While the SDF is a key ally of the United States in the fight against the Islamic State, Turkey regards the militia as an extension of the banned Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which it designates as a terrorist organization.
