PUWU to Prez Mahama: Ready to Collaborate on Energy, Water Solutions

Accra, Jan. 13, GNA – The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has congratulated President John Mahama and pledged to work with his government to find permanent solutions to energy, water, and housing.

A statement issued in Accra by Timothy Nyame, General Secretary of PUWU, acknowledged President Mahama’s resounding victory in the recent election and pledging to collaborate with his government.

“We are ready to collaborate with the government in finding permanent solutions to the energy, housing, and water situation at an affordable cost to Ghanaians.

“It is, however, refreshing and heartwarming to note the enthusiasm of commentators and other interest groups attempting to offer solutions in addressing the energy sector challenges, for that matter utility concerns of Ghana,” the statement said.

It also emphasised the importance of stakeholder engagement in finding amicable solutions to the country’s energy, water, and housing concerns.

“We have observed with keen interest comments, recommendations, and suggestions that need to be taken to sustain the energy sector using information available to them, without any proof of success or stakeholder engagement they have undertaken to arrive at the conclusion.

“PUWU of TUC is not aware of the many interest groups, locally and abroad, when it comes to investment in the power and energy sector.

“We are also aware of many who paraded the corridors of power with interests in ECG in the past and have metamorphosed and resurfaced to continue their game,” the statement said.

The union stated that their stance on ECG privatisation remains unchanged.

“We can vividly recall the engagement we had with the previous NDC administration regarding issues of Power Distributor, ECG.

“PUWU of TUC wishes to reaffirm that its position on ECG privatisation and management remains unchanged and believes the best alternative presented stands as the best for Ghanaians and other stakeholders.

“While the Power Distributor is heavily controlled and managed by politicians, we have continuously expressed our disquiet on the cost of input in running the power sector, which will invariably be factored into electricity pricing,” the statement ended.
