Accra, Jan 09, GNA – Ghana’s Parliament has approved the composition of its Appointments Committee, a crucial body responsible for vetting and recommending nominees for ministerial and other key appointments.

The Committee will be chaired by Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker with Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Deputy Majority Leader serving as Vice Chairperson.

Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has been appointed as the Ranking Member, while Madam Patricia Appiagyei, the Deputy Minority Leader would serve as the Deputy Ranking Member.

The Appointments Committee plays a vital role in scrutinising and recommending to Parliament the approval or otherwise of persons nominated by the President for appointment as Ministers of State, their Deputies, and other positions specified under the Constitution or relevant legislation.

According to the Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Committee’s composition was based on the ratio of 183 to 88, reflecting the parliamentary seats held by the ruling party and the opposition.

He said: “Mr Speaker, the committee respectfully recommends to the House to adopt this report and approve the membership of the appointment and business committee as composed and recomposition of the committees of selection based on the ratio of 183 to 88. Mr Speaker, I shall submit.”

The approval of the Appointments Committee’s composition marks a significant step in the legislative process, enabling Parliament to effectively fulfill its oversight responsibilities.
