Accra, Jan 8, GNA – All Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have been directed to transfer their duties, government properties, and relevant documents to their respective Coordinating Directors.
The directive, issued by Mr. Amin Abdul-Rahman, Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD), stated that the Coordinating Directors would oversee the daily administration of the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) until the President appoints substantive MMDCEs.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry in response to the President’s directive to revoke the appointments of all MMDCEs on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Mr. Abdul-Rahman said all appointed Assembly Members in possession of any public assets must immediately hand them over to their respective Coordinating Directors.
In accordance with Article 243 (3)(b) of the Constitution and Section 20 (3)(b) of the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936), he confirmed that the President had revoked the appointments of all MMDCEs, effective immediately.
Furthermore, he explained that under Section 10 (9)(a) of the Local Governance (Amendment) Act 2017 (Act 940), the President had also revoked the mandates of all appointed Assembly Members across all District Assemblies.
Mr. Abdul-Rahman concluded by directing Coordinating Directors to assume administrative responsibility for their respective MMDAs with immediate effect.
“All MMDCDs are however to take note, that they are not to undertake any capital expenditure related activity during this period.
“On behalf of the President, we wish to thank all outgoing MMDCEs and Appointed Assembly Members for their service to the Republic of Ghana,” he added.
