Ketsi (O/R), Jan 14, GNA-Residents of Ketsi, a farming community in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region, has appealed to benevolent organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Jasikan Municipal Assembly to provide them with safe, potable and accessible water system for domestic use.
The community with a population of over 500 inhabitants depended on contaminated water from Ketsi stream, which is some five kilometres from the community for domestic use.
Mr. John Kumah-Misiame, an Opinion Leader of the Community, who led the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the water source, said that the water often dried up and if that happened the community members had to purchase sachet water for use.
He said the situation was also affecting the academic performance of the students in the community as they would have to trek five kilometres to the water source on a daily basis to fetch water for bathing before going to school.
He said they were often tired and exhausted so could not concentrate on their studies, affecting their academic work and performance.
Mr. Kumah-Misiame said there were also health implications for residents as they sometimes developed diarrhea and rashes after using the water unboiled.
He said during the dry season those who attempted using the muddy water have to use potassium alum in purifying the water and described the situation as sorrowful and pathetic for the residents to be going through such ordeal in this 21st century.
Mr. Kumah-Misiame, thus, appealed to benevolent organisations and NGOs to come to their aid by providing them with a mechanised water system.
