Takoradi, Jan. 13, GNA- A cross section of residents within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan area are disappointed at the destruction of the statue of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia-Nkwanta roundabout in the Western Region.

They described the destruction as dishonorable to authority, uncivilised and unruly action to be tolerated and condoned in a democratic society.

Mr. Kofi Bonsu, a Public Servant told the Ghana News Agency that “this is not fair no matter the acrimony one has for the former President…Just as you don’t wish your worst enemy death the same way our former President’s image must be protected regardless “.

He said morality, respect for the elderly in particular and one another in general has gradually been thrown to dogs in communities, a tangent that must not be entrenched.

Mr. Obosu said, “We should begin a national reorientation programme on the values, beliefs, emblems and symbols as well as songs and personalities of state who have distinguished or contributed to the development of the country”.

Mr. Samuel Ackah said, one good turn deserves another…” if the current state actors and all stakeholders do not stand against the act of destruction of state property and statue of personalities very soon, it will become acceptable norm “.

He said the destruction of the image of the Former President must be condemned in no uncertain terms and the National Security should fish out perpetrators of the ill act for the necessary state sanctions.

The President Statue, mounted some three months ago in 2024, had generated a lot of mixed feeling among residents as to how beneficial the statue was comparing the spate of development in the Western Region.

Some felt that even the roundabout hosting the statue was a testament of unfinished business in the Region which did not call for any mooted recognition or honour.

Nana Hima Dekyi XIV President Upper Dixcove Traditional Council in a statement to counter the public perception and agitation said, “the paramouncies feel that the President needed to be recognised for the numerous infrastructure projects in the Region”.

However, the Region woke up to the gory incident of one of the former “President’s leg intentionally damaged by an unknown individual or individuals.”

The last straw that broke the camel’s back is its total dismantling on the Night of Sunday, January 12, 2024.
