Sunyani, Jan. 13, GNA – Civil Society and Non-Governmental Organisations (CSOs/NGOs) in the country have been urged to be more transparent and accountable to their operational communities, in order to access more funding for community development in 2025.
Mrs Alima Bawah, the Co-founder, Cow Tribe Africa, gave the advice and expressed concern about lack of funding which remained a challenge for many NGOs and CSOs in the country now because of the nation’s attainment of a middle-income status.
The Cow Tribe is an organisation that leverages and harnesses the power of technology to deliver animal vaccines.
Mrs Bawah advice came at the wake of growing concerns in the NGOs and CSOs community about lack of funding support from development partners due to Ghana’s current state of middle-income status.
“The funding community is a very small one and highly connected too so once having been able to account to them and even the people you served, then it becomes a problem because they easily spread information,” Mrs Bawah explained.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on the prospects of NGOs and CSOs in 2025, Mrs Bawah, also the Board Chair of the Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), an anti-corruption and media advocacy NGO said it would be difficult for partners to recommend NGOs and CSOs for funding support without proper accountability.
“Generally, I think accountability in the NGO system in the country for me is very good, but of course every area we have the bad and the good ones. The issue with the NGO system is that how transparent and accountable you are will determine the next project you get to execute,” she said.
“It is not like the public sector where things just happen, and nothing is done about it. In fact, once you have been unable to account properly to them it will be very difficult to get funding support from our development partners,” she stated.
“I can’t say the NGO area in general is not accountable. Comparatively they are highly accountable,” Mr Bawah stated.
