Afenyo-Markin reflects on challenges of Eighth Parliament

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Jan 6, GNA – As Ghana’s Eighth Parliament comes to a close, Majority Leader, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Monday shared his thoughts on the difficulties faced during the period.

Delivering his dissolution message on the Floor of Parliament, the Majority Leader described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority as “tough, stubborn, and difficult to work with.”

That, he explained, made it challenging to reach agreements.

Mr Afenyo-Markin added that his combative approach was often misunderstood, with some people expecting him to “reach out” simply because of his position as Majority Leader.

He, however, emphasised that the Minority’s unwavering stance made it hard to find common grounds.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, highlighted the struggles in completing government business due to the lack of support from the Minority.

“Mr Speaker, the minority were such tough, stubborn, difficult side, you could never have an agreement with them because they were smelling power and I understand, rightly so,” he said.

His comments offer a glimpse into the complexities and challenges of Ghana’s Eighth Parliament.

As the country looks to the future, it is clear that building bridges between opposing parties would be crucial for progress, he added.
