Accra, Dec. 09, GNA – Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, UN Special Representative for West Africa, has commended Ghana’s National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF) for implementing strong security measures that contributed to ensuring peaceful elections.
“Your results and your example will inspire other countries in West Africa, in the Sahel, and the rest of the continent. Peaceful elections are not by chance but by deliberate and dedicated efforts,” he said at a meeting with members of the taskforce in Accra on Monday.
Mr. Simão, joined by Mr. Charles Abani, UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, and other diplomats, commended the leadership of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police and Chair of the NESTF, for ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
He acknowledged that elections often stirred strong emotions, which could lead to negative behaviors, including violence.
However, he praised the taskforce for its proactive measures and its crucial role in maintaining stability throughout the election period.
“One of my friends, a former colleague, was a security officer. And one day he said, listen, when the security force works well, nothing happens. And therefore, it creates the impression that peace happens by itself but not as a product of work done.,” he said.
Mr Simão highlighted the taskforce’s educative approach, citing interactions with media, civil society organizations, and the judiciary during stakeholders’ meetings in Tamale and Ho as key examples of building consensus for peaceful elections.
He expressed the UN’s pride in being associated with Ghana’s peaceful elections and stated that the NESTF’s achievements would serve as a model for other countries.
“We want elections across Africa to allow people to select their leaders in peace and tranquility. Your institutions are key to ensuring this stability,” he said.
The UN, he added, would encourage other nations to learn from Ghana’s success story by visiting and observing the strategies employed in preparing for and conducting peaceful elections.
The NESTF’s efforts, Mr. Simão said, would inspire not only West Africa but also countries in the Sahel and beyond.
“The process of electing leaders should happen in peace, and your results demonstrate the importance of collaboration among stakeholders,” he said.
The UN pledged to continue its support for Ghana and other nations striving for peaceful and democratic processes.
