Tema Executive Lions Club celebrates Christmas with Tema township cells inmates

Tema, Dec. 27, GNA — The Tema Executive Lions Club, in collaboration with the Tema Industrial Lions Club, has celebrated this year’s Boxing Day with inmates in some selected police cells within Tema.

The club used the day to relieve the hunger and raise the spirits of the inmates in the cells.

Dr. Rejoice Lawer, the Charter President of the Tema Executive Lions Club, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that as a humanitarian club dedicated to the service of the community, especially the underprivileged, they realised that during the festive season, inmates most often were left to their fate, with very little hope and care.

She said as a result, they sought to remind the inmates of the love and care that awaited them after their reform, providing them with food and drinks as they strengthened and revitalised themselves.

According to her, this activity was important because it made a difference in their lives by giving them enough food, as the inmates do not receive enough food daily, which affects their strength and hopes as they await their trial.

“The activity also sought to provide food and drinks to children within the slum areas of Tema Newtown, creating a sense of joy, love, and belonging during the festive season,” she said.

She added it was their firm belief that, even as justice was being served, the inmates remained a part of the community, indicating that during this festive season, they deserved to be shown some love and affection.

Inspector Joseph Kpanda, the Counter Supervisor of the Tema Main Harbour Police Station, appealed to the Lions Club to support them in tackling some challenges confronting the station.

Inspector Kpanda noted that they needed food for the inmates, staff furniture, washing powder, and other detergents that would go a long way to help the welfare of the inmates.
