Berekum, (Bono), Dec. 6, GNA – Election 2024 stakeholders in the Berekum East Constituency have met and deliberated on measures to facilitate peaceful conduct of the General Election in the Berekum Municipality.
The meeting, held at Berekum, the constituency capital, was facilitated by the Municipal office of the Electoral Commission (EC) and was attended by the members of the Election 2024 Taskforce, the media and representatives of the various political parties.
Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Andrews Okonenge, the Berekum East Divisional Police Commander highlighted the role of the media and asked them to guard against misinformation and remain circumspect in their election reportage.
He gave the assurance that the police and other security services had put in place pragmatic measures to ensure law and order at the various polling stations, saying some personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces had also been deployed to patrol the constituency.
“We are working tirelessly through Joint Operations Centers”, he stated, and urged everybody to behave well and remain law abiding too, saying the police would provide the media special security numbers for them to phone-in on emerging security issues.
DSP Okonenge called on the stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring peaceful elections, warning that the security service would not spare troublemakers.
Mrs Priscilla Ottoo, the Berekum East Electoral Officer reminded the media that only practitioners with the Electoral Commission’s approved accreditation cards would be allowed entry to the polling stations and the collation centre.
She also urged the media covering the elections to endeavour to broadcast credible information on the polls and cautioned them against spreading fake news.
Mr George Hinneh, the Deputy Berekum East Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) advised the media to guard against the temptation of interviewing any political party representative on the Election Day.
By doing so, that could lead to the spread of misinformation and disinformation that could potentially undermine the credibility of the polls and trigger political violence at the various polling station.
