Techiman, (Bono East), Dec. 9, GNA- Residents in the Techiman South constituency in the Bono East Region have condemned the violent attack at the constituency’s collation center on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
They called on the police to be expeditious in their investigations, apprehend and bring the attackers to book.
Some irate youth perceived to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) raided the Techiman Divisional Police Headquarters building, which served as the collation centre, burnt election materials and destroyed other properties.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Techiman, described the raid as unfortunate and unacceptable, saying that it had sent bad signals and portrayed an unfavourable picture on the constituency.
Mr Samuel Kudjo, a trader at the Techiman Central Market, who told the GNA that he was a witness to the attack said the culprits ought to be arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law.
That would also serve as a deterrent to like-minded others who cause troubles in the election seasons, he stated.
“The act of lawlessness is becoming too much in the constituency and the police must act fast and deal with the law breakers,” another resident who spoke on condition of anonymity stated.
Mr Joseph Wuradu, a teacher, also spoke against the raid, and called on the police to ensure that the suspects were arrested and prosecuted.
Reacting to the incident, Mr William Bamfo-Apori, the Techiman South Electoral Officer, also described it as unfortunate, saying because the raiders burnt the election materials and ballots papers, the EC could not declare the results.
“We couldn’t declare the results because raiders burnt all the election materials”, he stated, saying the constituency would forward a situational report on the incident to the EC’s headquarters in Accra for advice.
Meanwhile, the constituency had witnessed massive jubilations, as hundreds of supporters and members of the party hit the street of the Bono East Regional capital to celebrate the elections victory.
Most of them were clad in party paraphernalia, held miniature flags and danced to NDC’s customised election 2024 campaign music.
