Nkwanta residents decry inability to observe 31st watch night service due to curfew

Nkwanta (O/R), Dec.31, GNA – The Nkwanta town in the Oti Region faces an uncertain 31st watch night service because of a curfew imposed by the Ministry of Interior.

This threatens a disruption to the traditional crossover night service.

The annual service, which was cherished by the people, typically draws hundreds of worshippers, who gather to usher in the new year with prayers, singing and reflection.

However, with the curfew set to take place at 2000hours, many are worried that the service would not be able to take place as usual.

Reverend David Darko Awuda, the chairperson of the Nkwanta South Local Council of Churches, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the Council requested an extension of time for the 31st watch night service but the Municipal security Council in the area could not grant the extension of time due protracted tribal disturbances in the area.

He said that even though they understood the need for security, they hoped that the security would find a way to accommodate their request by extending the curfew time to a little over 12 midnight.

“It is a special time for us to come together as a community and celebrate the start of a new year,” he said.

Rev Awuda however cautioned all Churches within the town to abide by the directives from the Security Council and close early before the curfew time.

The curfew was imposed by the Ministry of Interior in response to security concerns in the area on November 21, 2023.

Some residents understood the need for caution, many are disappointed that the service may not be able to take place.
