Accra, Dec. 19, GNA – The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana, has commissioned its seven-storey building in Accra.
The facility was constructed partly through the levying of ICU constituent members and the national union’s funding.
It houses the Accra Regional Secretariat, departments and specialised units of the Union, as well as a 3-floor private hotel facility, a law chamber, among others.
Mr Morgan Ayawine, the General Secretary, ICU-Ghana, speaking at the event, said the building was dedicated to the memory of the late Napoleon D.K. Kpoh, the 6th General Secretary of ICU.
Mr Kpoh initiated and completed the construction of the edifice, christened as ICU House.
Mr Ayawine said the edifice served as a rallying point for all members of the union to have their conferences, meetings, and other union activities.
He expressed excitement about the ceremony, saying, “It is a cherished legacy that we hold dear to our hearts, and we are proud to be one of the great unions in the African continent that articulates the aspirations of labour.”
He said the union had carved out a niche for itself not only in organising, collective bargaining, and grievance handling but also in offering trade union education to its members on handling workplace issues to ensure industrial peace and harmony.
The facility, he said, epitomised foresight, perseverance, and tenacity of purpose, pledging to ensure proper maintenance of the building.
The union was founded through the merger of five distinct national unions on May 25, 1960.
