Accra, Dec. 10, GNA-The Ghana Wheelchair Tennis Federation (GWTF) in collaboration with the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana and International Tennis Federation (ITF) have organised one-day tennis event to mark the World International Disability Day.

The event featured about thirty wheelchair tennis players from Kumasi, Takoradi, Koforidua, Cape Coast and Accra.

It was aimed at recruiting young players into the national team.

Dr. Herny Larbi General Secretary for the NPC-Ghana explained that the event was in line with ITF upcoming programmes.

He said, “the whole idea is that ITF has a new strategy plan to be implemented from 2025 and to also make sure that they have education added to the sport to be able to fit in the ITF plan”.

Ebenezer Atta, one of the Kumasi based players expressed his profound gratitude to the leadership of NPC-Ghana for the opportunity given to him.

He said, “I am a shoe maker at Atonsu market in Kumasi but due to this opportunity, I am able to come to Accra to participate in this year’s competition”.

“Ever since I joined these sports it has helped me a lot, it has boosted my confidence, there were some places I would never get opportunity to go, there but because of the sports I can go there without any fear.”

“I urge my fellow disability people not to feel neglected in the society. They should come and join us because being a disable doesn’t not mean you can’t do anything.”

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated every year on December 3.

It is to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and culture life.
