Gushegu (N/R), Dec 01, GNA – The government has inaugurated the Gushegu Water System project to supply potable water to residents of Gushegu and other towns in the Gushegu Municipality, including Bulugu and Nyensung to address the perennial water shortage experienced in the area.
The project, which started in June, this year, and executed by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) with funding from the government to the tune of mire than GHc11.23 million, is expected to serve a 20-year projected population of 53,954, at about a demand of 2.0 million gallons per day.
It involved two boreholes drilled and mechanised at Bulugu, two activated mechanised boreholes at Nyensung, all powered with both solar energy and electricity.
Additionally, a total of 9.3 kilometres of pipelines have been laid to transport the water to a high level steel tank with a total storage capacity of 35,200 gallons to distribute to the communities through 32 public standpipes.
Mr Hassan Tampuli, Member of Parliament for Gushegu and Deputy Minister of Transport, speaking during the inauguration of the project at Gushegu, said it would address the perennial water challenges and serve the people for a long time.
He said, “From now to April, next year, we were likely to suffer a severe water shortage in Gushegu and its communities because of the drought we suffered in the Northern Region. By this singular intervention, this anticipation has turned into a joyful occasion and the people of Gushegu are extremely grateful.”
He assured the people of the area that he would pay their water bills for the first one month, saying “I want you to test the water for free in one month; from now to the next one month, all water bills will be paid by me; not for only NPP members. Even if it’s the Parliamentary Candidate for the NDC, I will pay.”
Mr Dawuni Robert Yaja, Gushegu Municipal Chief Executive, appealed to the Chiefs of the area to support the officials of the CWSA as they worked to provide water for the people of the area.
He said, “As stakeholders, all of us have a responsibility to ensure that Gushegu is part of the nation’s effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of providing potable water for all by 2030. Let us encourage consumers to pay for the water they consume just as we pay for the electricity we consume.”
Naa-Yab Ziblim II, Paramount Chief of Gushegu, commended the government for addressing one of the critical needs of the area.
