Accra, Dec 01, GNA – The Ghana Conference of Religions for Peace (GCRP), an inter-religious council has urged Ghanaians to adhere to the teachings of the Golden Rule, to “Treat others the way you want to be treated,” as the December 7, 2024, elections approaches.
It said the citizens could do this by upholding the values of peace, human dignity, mutual respect, tolerance, and unity.
This was contained in a statement signed by Hajj Muhammad Amir Kpakpo Addo, Executive Secretary, GCRP and copied to the Ghana News Agency.
It said: “Our diversity our strength, and we must celebrate our differences while working towards a common goal of a harmonious, peaceful and prosperous Ghana.”
They appealed to all citizens to respect the electoral process, recognising that every vote counts and every voice matters, stating, “Let us refrain from divisive rhetoric and hate speech and, instead, promote constructive dialogue and engagement.”
The statement said: “As people of faith, we are committed to promoting tolerance, understanding and mutual respect. We recognize that our differences are a blessing, and we must strive to understand each other’s perspectives and beliefs.”
It called on religious leaders at all levels, to amplify the voices of peace, harmony and justice at this crucial moment.
The statement urged all stakeholders, including political leaders, citizens, and security agencies, to prioritize peace and stability above all else.
“Let us work together to prevent conflict and ensure a smooth transition, regardless of the election outcome.
“At the same time, we implore all winning candidates to treat their wins as a call to service and losing candidates to accept the result graciously, using them as a chance to learn from the electorate,” it stated.
The GCRP further called on all people of faith to pray for peace, wisdom, and guidance during this crucial period, adding, “May our collective prayer and efforts usher in a new era of peace, happiness, prosperity and unity for Ghana.”
“Let us stand together in the spirit of the African philology of Ububtu which says, ‘I am because We are,’ united in our quest for peace, and commit to building a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and generations to come,” the statement exhorted.
The GCRP comprised the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Christian Council of Ghana, Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana, Office of the National Chief Imam, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches, Council of Independent Churches, and Council for African Instituted Churches – Ghana.
