Accra, Dec. 15, GNA -The Greater Accra Basketball Association (GABA) in collaboration with the Swain Basketball Academy, New York Basketball Square, Shelissa Thomas and FIFA Africa Zone 3 have launched “Me overcoming Me” Basketball Camp programme to empower young ladies.
At a press conference held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Mr. Ayitey Bulley Chairman of the GABA said the project is aimed at developing young girls interested in playing the game and the association, was excited to partner with international basketball clubs.
He said it was not just about playing the game of basketball, but they were also looking at the social, cultural and entertainment impacts, which the country would benefit.
Mr. Austin Luguterah, University of Ghana Sports Director said the university had a programme in line with empowering girls into sports.
He said, “we have a programme that related to girls or lady’s empowerment and there is already something we are working on as a directorate.
“We are trying to gather some data to find out the physiological impact of sports on students’ athletes and the focus is not only on students’ athletes but ladies.
“On behalf of University, the Sport Directorate we welcome you and associate ourselves in everything you are doing to empower women especially through sports and basketball specific.”
Dr. Shelissa Thomas a Mental Health Advocate said she was excited to be part of the people who would be addressing mental wellness among players.
She said, “many young players struggle with injuries and don’t know how to cope, which affects their mental health”.
“We are here to provide support, guidance, and tools for recovery and resilience.”
Coach Robert, Founder of Swain Baskeball Academy said his aim was to instill life skills, inspire young players to believe and achieve their dreams though training and encouragement.
