Savelugu (N/R), Dec 14, GNA – The Centre for Opportunities and Rural Development (CORD-Ghana), an NGO, has launched its Green School Initiative at the Savelugu School for the Deaf.
The launching was part of activities to commemorate this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
This year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is on the theme: “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”.
The Green School Initiative operates through environmental clubs across basic schools in the northern part of the country as part of efforts to inculcate environmental sustainability consciousness in students.
Dr Kodima Siita, Executive Director, CORD-Ghana, speaking during the event at Savelugu, said it was to encourage the active involvement of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in climate change advocacy by mentoring and supporting them to be ambassadors of climate change, not only in their schools but also in their communities.
He said CORD-Ghana had so far operationalised 40 of such clubs in various schools as part of its commitment to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals 10 and 13, which sought to reduce inequality within and among countries, and to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact.
He added that the club was also to serve as a platform where PwDs could strategise and contribute meaningfully to policy and decision-making processes on issues of climate change to ensure that their voices and views were heard and considered at the national level.
Dr Kodimah called for more partnership and support to ensure the effective operation of the clubs and facilitate inclusive advocacy on climate change for sustainable development.
CORD-Ghana donated some detergents, toiletries, shoes, sanitary pads amongst other items to the students of the school.
Madam Nora Naaso, Headmistress, Savelugu School for the Deaf, commended CORD-Ghana for the initiative and the donation, saying, it would support the management of the school in terms of hygiene and health.
She said the school was confronted with infrastructural challenges and appealed to well-meaning Ghanaians to support it with funds and other logistics to improve its infrastructure situation.
