Accra, Dec 09, GNA – President-elect John Dramani Mahama has lauded Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for conceding defeat to him long before the Electoral Commission declared the December 7 Presidential Election Results.

Mr. Mahama gave the commendation in his victory speech on Monday night, a few hours after the Electoral Commission had declared him the winner of the Presidential Election with 56.55 per cent of valid votes cast.

“I would like to thank Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his statesmanship in conceding the election long before the declaration of the result by the Electoral Commission,” Mr. Mahama said.

He added: “This concession largely diffused the tensions that are characteristics of high-stake elections such as this.”

Mr. Mahama also expressed his gratitude and praise to the Almighty God, saying, “this successful outcome of the Presidential Election could only be the doing of the Lord.”

The President-elect said he had also received a call from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who graciously extended his congratulations to him.

He said the duo had the opportunity to discuss matters related to the joint transitional team.

“We agreed on an early inauguration of a joint transitional team as early as Wednesday the 11th of December,” Mr. Mahama said.

“I conveyed my sincerest regards to him and expressed my readiness for us to work together to ensure a smooth transition in the best interest of the Ghanaian people.”
