Argentina’s Milei calls for international culture war at CPAC meeting

Buenos Aires, Dec. 5, (dpa/GNA) – After nearly a year in office, Argentina’s right-wing libertarian President Javier Milei has called for an international culture war at a meeting in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

“The world is breathing freedom again,” he said at a meeting of the Argentinian branch of the right-wing US Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), referring to the election of Donald Trump as the next US president.

Milei said there is a need to wage a culture war, as it is important to fight against the left in universities, the media, and culture.

Attending the conference were Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law and co-chair of the Republican Party, Santiago Abascal, leader of the right-wing Spanish party Vox, and right-wing US commentator Ben Shapiro. Also participating via video were Trump’s former adviser Steve Bannon and Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Although Milei has started making political compromises in Argentina, he portrayed himself in his speech as an unyielding political outsider.

“We are sceptical of the concept of dialogue because we are not interested in continuing the political deals,” he said in his speech. “We have come to break with consensus.”

Milei assumed office on December 10, 2023, and initiated radical reforms. Thousands of civil servants were dismissed, and social programmes were massively cut. While his austerity measures succeeded in significantly reducing inflation, they also stifled the economy. In this once-affluent country, now more than 50% of people live below the poverty line.
