79 injured in fan clashes at German fourth-division match

Leipzig, Dec 1, (dpa/GNA) – Rival fans clashed after an eastern German fourth division match, between Carl Zeiss Jena and Chemie Leipzig, which left 79 people injured, according to local police.

Police said late Saturday that the fighting started when both camps, violently opened buffer gates behind a stand, after Leipzig fans had thrown pyrotechnics towards the Jena fans.

Police said it used batons and irritant gas to end “a brief and uncontrolled confrontation.”

It said 10 officers and five stewards were injured, along with 64 fans from both camps, and 40 criminal and misdemeanour charges filed.

Police also said it also used batons and irritant gas to disperse a group of 350 home fans, who had marched through the city before the match.
Jena won 5-0.
