Bawku (U/E), Dec 7, GNA – Security has been beefed up in Bawku ahead of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Led by Ghana Police Service and supported by the various security agencies, identified hotspots have been mapped out and officials deployed to those areas.
Bawku has been identified as one of the major hotspots ahead of the December polls due to the re-emergence of the protracted chieftaincy conflict.
The conflict since October, this year only, has claimed at least 33 lives.
Sources within the Upper East Regional Police Command says the region received reinforcement from the national headquarters to help maintain peace and security before, during and after the elections.
A total of 63,632 voters are expected to cast their votes in 149 polling stations across the Bawku Central Constituency.
Apart from the Presidential slot, three people are vying for the parliamentary seat in the area.
In the Parliamentary elections, the incumbent Member of Parliament, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate, Mr Mahama Ayariga is seeking re-election.
But he is up against Mr Paul Agobiri Alale, Professional Teacher and candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Mr Emmanuel Anaba, a Medical Laboratory Assistant and candidate for the All-People’s Congress (APC).
