Accra, Dec. 10, GNA – Dr. Harry Agbanu, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has cautioned that citizens’ approval of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election should not be taken for granted.
He said that the election outcome placed a “huge responsibility” on the President-elect, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“The NDC has received a massive endorsement of the Ghanaian people unprecedented in the political history of the country to lead them to the attainment of their collective aspirations, hopes, dreams, and development. This cannot be taken lightly!” he stated.
Dr. Agbanu attributed the NDC’s victory in the December polls to citizens’ “aversion” to the perceived inefficiencies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
“The Ghanaian people voted out of anger…Some stayed away from participating in the electoral process because of the claim that the NPP and the NDC are the same,” he noted.
Urging the incoming administration to avoid repeating past mistakes, Dr. Agbanu called on the NDC to distinguish itself as “a political force anchored in the fundamental values of probity and accountability.”
“I know some members of the NDC may want to do the same things they have been complaining about, but it must take effective leadership to get them aligned to the values of the party,” he said.
Dr. Agbanu called for “a thorough review” of the Free Senior High School Programme to make it “more cost-effective.”
In addition, he recommended that the new NDC administration implement the Constitution Review Committee report and ensure the election of Metropolitan, District, and Municipal Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
“It is my conviction that with a well-defined communication strategy anchored on transparency, collective engagements and respect for dissenting opinions, we can instigate the buy-in of all stakeholders, relevant agencies, development partners, and the general populace for collective actions to transform the lives of ordinary Ghanaians,” he added.
