Tema, Nov. 9, GNA – The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) has honoured farmers in the area for their efforts and contributions to food security and the economy.

Mrs Patience Alloh, the Tema West Municipal Director for Agriculture, said National Farmer’s Day is dedicated to honouring the nation’s backbone and recognising their tireless efforts.

Mrs Alloh said to sustain Ghana’s food security, it was important to build climate-resilient agriculture, noting that it was key to mitigate climate change impacts to ensure food availability, reduce poverty, conserve resources, promote biodiversity, and support economic growth, social equity, and national stability.

The director explained that the impact of climate change on agriculture was real and that farmers faced unpredictable rains, prolonged dry seasons, and erratic weather patterns that made farming increasingly difficult.

She said the celebration was not just about acknowledging those challenges but addressing them head-on.

“Building climate-resilient agriculture is a necessity in relation to adopting innovative practices that not only adapt to climate changes but also enhance productivity in ensuring we produce enough not just for today but tomorrow,” she added.

According to her, the Assembly is placing emphasis on women’s groups who are at the forefront of food production and processing through training programmes designed to equip them to process and preserve local foods to generate income and contribute to food security.

Mrs Felicia Edem Attipoe, Tema West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said to ensure all year round food production, the Assembly would support farmers to ensure such a goal was achieved.

She congratulated award winners and recognised the role farmers played not only in food security but also in the development of the country’s economy.

The MCE said the government would do all it could to ensure farmers across the country benefitted from the growth of the sector through programmes and policies.

She said through the municipal director of agriculture, the assembly distributed 45 bags of NPK fertilisers among 15 vulnerable farmers.

Alhaji Osman Baba Iddrissu, who was adjudged the district best farmer, expressed his gratitude for the honour.

Alhaji Iddrissu, who engages in crop farming and animal rearing, called on the assembly to support farmers as they were losing most of their lands to real estate development.

He urged farmers to produce organic and healthy food to keep the nation alive, stressing that “without farmers, there’s no nation.”

The event was witnessed by dignitaries, including traditional heads, religious leaders, assembly members, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the assembly, and the public.
