Hatsukope (VR), Nov 16, GNA – Student debaters have been encouraged to cultivate a strong interest in reading to help them develop effective debating skills.
Mr Napoleon Atisu, Head teacher of Sukladzi R.C. Basic School in the Ketu South Municipality who made the call emphasised the importance of reading saying, it was essential for debaters as it broadens understanding of various topics, enabling debaters to argue persuasively.
He gave the advice as a co-judge during a debate between Three-Town Senior High School (SHS) and St. Paul’s Senior High School and Minor Seminary (SPACO) on the motion, “The Use of Social Media: Is It a Curse or a Blessing?”, which saw the SPACO debating team triumphing over their opponents.
The debate formed part of activities including a float, cleanup, sports competition for primary kids and cooking competition among teachers to mark the municipality’s International Day of the Girl Child-Gender Week Celebration, with the grand durbar expected to come off November 29, 2024.
“Reading enhances your vocabulary and improves your articulation and expression. It also helps increase your confidence in making your arguments. For those of you seeking to improve your debating and public speaking skills, be an avid reader for effective communication and persuasion,” Mr Atisu encouraged.
Madam Cecilia Dokli, Girl Child Coordinator, Ketu South Municipal Education Directorate congratulated Master Philip Mawufemor Gyasi and Master Philip Junior Forson from the SPACO team and Miss Emmanuella Yormesu and Master Vincent Dominic Kekeli Zowonu from the Three-Town SHS for performing wonderfully.
“In fact, though one team has won, both debating teams did excellent jobs. And to me, you are both winners and I congratulate you on this. It is not easy to stand in front of a lot of people to speak and make arguments. Keep it up.”
The debaters spoke to Ghana News Agency saying, they came to the competition prepared and confident of winning.
Master Gyasi, the main speaker for the SPACO team said “It is a good feeling for having won the competition. We were for the motion and put a lot of work into researching on the topic and rehearsing for today. Our trainers were also helpful, guiding us throughout. In all, we are thankful that the hard work paid.”
