Sesime M/A Basic School gets new JHS block

Akatsi (VR), Nov. 1, GNA- After years of struggle for a conducive teaching and learning environment, Sesime M/A Basic School within the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region has been equipped with all the necessary infrastructural demands.

This was after a three-unit Junior High School (JHS) block was added to the already built eight-unit primary school block, fully funded by ‘Hope for Ghana’ a non-government organisation (NGO) for championing effective teaching and learning activities at the school.

In a message delivered by Mr. Joseph Fleagboh, Headteacher of the School, he revealed that the school, founded in 1993 as a kindergarten, had gone through turbulent moments and difficulties in ensuring a brighter future for academic activities.

“When I took over the administration of this school, I had 66 pupils, comprising 35 boys and 31 girls, a trained teacher, and two female self-volunteers. Knowing that the school lacks infrastructure, my first meeting with SMC and PTA resulted in the provision of urinal and KVIP,” he said.

Mr. Fleagboh, who touched on the various avenues explored for assistance but all to no avail, indicated that Dr Steeve Greene, Founder of ‘Hope for Ghana’ and his deputy Director in charge of operations visited the school for discussions with other key actors from the educational directorate for a possible help.

After days of fruitful deliberations, he further stated that the NGO, which has been in Ghana for over 38 years, in March 2023, commissioned an eight-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities such as desks, tables, and ceiling fans, staff room, library, computer laboratory, toilet facilities for staff and pupils, water purification system, and a solar system for generating electricity.

Mr. Karim Umar Ayaana, the Akatsi South Municipal Director of Education, on his part, commended the donors for the great offer to the community.

He said education remained a key factor in the growth of every community and the country at large, adding that, “constant parent-teacher engagement must be enhanced to promote academic excellence.”

Torgbui Ladzekpo Tete-Gefu IV, ‘Dufia’ of Horti and Chairman of the event, who represented the Avenor Traditional Council, expressed his excitement to the donors for the offer.

He presented smock dresses and citations on behalf of Togbe Dorglo Anumah VI, Paramount Chief of Avenor to the donors and later led the elders, and traditional leaders to a site where they offered a plot of land to the donors.

Dr Greene, in his speech, expressed gratitude to their donor partners in the diaspora and called for better care and maintenance of the facilities provided.

He promised that their outfit would continue to bring progress and growth in some key sectors in the various Ghanaian communities.

A total of 25 boxes of chalk were also donated by Mr. Louis Attivor, the Assembly Member for the area.

Sesime MA Basic School currently houses a student population of 297 pupils.

Dignitaries and residents from the area were in attendance at the colourful event.
